Ray Dykeman is an exceptionally knowledgeable, skilled and dedicated full-time tutor with over 20 years experience teaching and tutoring math and science at the elementary school, middle school, high school, college and graduate levels. He works with clients in the Bethesda, Potomac, Chevy Chase, MD and Northwest Washington, DC areas.

Ray focuses on cultivating in students a deep understanding of math and science: he wants them to see what is going on behind the facts they are asked to memorize and the operations they are asked to perform. When students understand the connection between math, science and the real world, this understanding leads both to a better ability to integrate new concepts, and to a greater appreciation and enthusiasm for math and science classes.

Ray finds that tutoring in a friendly, fun and respectful manner reduces student anxiety, increases interest and understanding, and improves grades. For students who respond to a firmer approach, Ray maintains clarity and standards while never sacrificing the emotional warmth that allows for an effective working partnership.

In addition, Ray adjusts his teaching style and focus to match the grade level of the student he is working with. For example, the parents of young students may find themselves concerned about their child's level of motivation and understanding. Ray works with these students to improve confidence, skill and motivation in order to lay a solid foundation for the challenges to come. In addition to skill building, he makes sure that his math lessons are fun! In middle school, math becomes more abstract. Students who may have been successful in elementary school may now find Ray's tutoring support to be just what they need to successfully navigate this new math environment. With students in high school and college, Ray focuses on helping students master difficult material, building skill, enthusiasm and confidence along the way.

A frequent comment Ray hears from his students is "why didn't anyone ever say that before?" Ray's uncommonly rich understanding of math and science, of his students' emotional needs, and of the learning process enables his students to leap ahead in their understanding, skill and enthusiasm, leading to greater satisfaction and higher grades and scores.
